- What were the activities (in and out of class) that enhanced your learning the most?

For Writing Assignment: 
Complete the first draft of your "logical division" essay.  Be sure to edit for a complete thesis statement in your introduction and parallelism throughout your essay.  Either email your completed essay to me by Sunday night or bring a printed version of your completed first draft to class on Monday for peer editing.
Your essay should be typed and double-spaced!  


The essay and the blog post will be your final two grades for the semester.

In the handout:  "Revising Sentences - Use of Parallelism" read the example of parallel and nonparallel sentences at the top of the page, and complete Exercises 1-10.

In "Engaging Writing 2," complete Exercise 11 on page 255. 

Write your thesis statement for your Logical Division essay.  Be sure your thesis statement lists the supporting points of your essay.  Bring both your outline and your thesis statement with you to class on Friday!

Logical Division Essay
STEP 2:  From your lists for your selected topic, write an OUTLINE and a TOPIC SENTENCE (see example on page 52).  
STEP 3:  From your outline, write a paragraph on your selected topic (see example on page 53).


This paragraph will be the basis for your essay, which is the final graded assignment for your writing class.  We will be working on this in class on Monday!

Things to Think about for Thursday Nov 17:

be prepared to discuss your idea for the 'field trip' for our friends downstairs...look at the notes we took in class.  Remember it only has to be 5 mins long and you can be as creative as you want as long as it relates back to the movie, our lessons on the movie, or Indian culture.  (you could also do a brief lesson/discussion/demonstration about high and low context cultures).

Topic Sentence
 Read page 51 about writing a topic sentence. Look at Dion's example of a topic sentence in STEP 1.   Review pages 26-27 to see how the topic sentence is formed with  your topic + your controlling idea(s)
Write a topic sentence for your "logical division" paragraph following this model.
 Brainstorming
Read page 51, STEP 2,  to see  how Dion used "brainstorming" to list ideas for each part of his topic.
Write:   Using a separate piece of paper for each part of your  topic, and label each page with the corresponding category.  (e.g.  Hassan would have 3 pages, one labeled Muslin Identity, one labeled Shiite Muslim Identity,and one labeled "my city" identity).  Then brainstorm ideas for each of these categories that are relevant to your topic sentence (see STEP 2).   Full sentences are not necessary in this stage.

On page 49:  Read about the assignment and begin to think about the topic you would like to write about.
Read "What is Logical Division and Why It is Important" on page 49-50. Be ready to discuss logical division in class (e.g. what is it, why it is important, etc).
Writing:  Do exercise #2 on pp. 49-50.
Thinking:  After reading "The Writing Process" on page 50, go back and look at the four topic choices on page 49.  Use the process outlined to select a topic that you can divide into logical parts.   Remember, this paragraph will be expanded into an essay, so please select a topic that you can easily divide and that you will be able to develop with details!

Website Critique:  Locate a website that you believe will be a valuable resource for your research paper.  Using the handout “Tools of the trade:  Web Site Evaluation Checklist,” evaluate, research and report on your website in the nine categories listed on the checklist.  Please be thorough when evaluating your site for purpose, content and intended audience. 

 If you quickly discover that a website will not suit your needs, please look for alternative sites for this evaluation.  If you reach this conclusion after completing your evaluation project, you may note this on your project, along with the factors that led to this decision.   (FOR EXAMPLE:   Based on my findings, I have decided not to use this website for my research because the site is not current and does not reflect the situation in my country at this time.)    If you will not be using your reviewed site for your paper, please list alternative sites that you will evaluate and consider.

Presentation of findings:  You may present your findings in a table, paragraphs, bullets, etc.  Be sure that each of the nine categories are represented and clearly identified.

1.  Based on our in-class work on pages 26-29, complete a first revision of your role model paragraph.  Read page 29, “Revision Checkpoint 1,” and make your revisions according to the directions.  Note:  All drafts of your work should be saved. 

2.  Complete exercises 10 and 11 on pages 30-31.  Read “Revision Checkpoint 2” and make any necessary changes to the background information about your role model.  At this point, it is your choice if you would like to re-type your paper.  We will be working on further revisions.

Select a topic for your cultural research paper and conduct initial research to verify that your topic is viable for this project:.  Through database research, locate a minimum of 3-5 peer reviewed journals that specifically address your topic.  Read the abstract/intro/conclusion, etc. to determine if the research article adequately addresses your selected topic.
